Is walking good for you?

Walking offers many benefits those of all ages. Walking has also been known to combat certain diseases leading to a healthier life. On top of this, it’s a completely free form of exercise and unbelievably easy to fit into even the most busy of schedules. Here’s just some of the benefits walking can bring to your life

1. Burn calories

A bit obvious but walking certainly helps to burn calories. This is great for anyone looking to maintain their weight or even those looking to lose some extra pounds. However the amount of calories you burn will depend on various factors such as the speed at which you are walking, the distance, whether you walk on the flat/uphill/downhill etc.

2. Lower blood sugar

Studies have shown that small walks a couple times a day will in fact improve blood sugar levels. Staggering your walk into shorter durations such as before or after your main three meals is a way of implementing this.

By allowing a small amount of time like 15 minutes after each meal you’re also making it easier to fit exercise into your routine.

3. Enhances immune

Quite an important benefit right now! Believe it or not, walking has been known to reduce your risk of getting a cold or flu. By adding walking to your daily routine you’re building immune stronger than before. This also means that if you do happen to get sick your symptoms will likely be a reduction to previously when you were less active.

4. Boosts energy levels

Going for a walk is one of the best ways possible to boost your energy levels. Personally, I find going for a walk first thing in the morning is better than any cup of coffee (and I love coffee!). Walking especially when you’re feeling tired and sluggish, can certainly be more effective than caffeine. This is due to the increased flow of oxygen throughout our bodies as we move.

5. Mental Health

Walking has been known to have a positive impact on your mental health too! Known to reduce anxiety and depression mainly. But it’s also a good way to clear your head when you’re in a bad mood.
